Welcome to Mercante (商shang 贾gu), a cozy Italian trattoria in a hutong, the small alleys of the historical center of Beijing, near the Drum and Bell towers, that since 2012 offers all handmade, home-style, traditional Emilia Romagna food, focusing on high-quality imported Italian ingredients.

Mercante is an old Italian word that means Merchant. This name came to our mind from the location we chose to open our cozy trattoria: at the center of a buzzy grocery street-and-shop market right at the cross of some small alleys (Hutong) that are the essence of the Old Beijing. Back in 2012 the location was considered unconventional to open a trattoria devoted to quality and authentic Italian flavours, but over these years of unconditional love for our mission Mercante not only became more and more well know as a restaurant destination for expats, locals, business and leisure travellers and generally diners that look for a more unique place to eat and experience the city, but collected many awards, culminated in 2018 with two prestigious recognitions.

Both these recognitions were confirmed this year as a witness to our effort in keeping every day the same attention to details as the first one. It’s not a case that our motto is: “Handmade always, Shortcuts never!”

The design is a mix of the style of classical Italy and communist China: red brick floor, marble table surface give the feeling of classical Italian style- the country root of the cuisine; the pieces of 50s-70s communist Chinese signature lamps, Danwei wooden chairs, big wooden suitcases, wooden doors add the elements of the local country-communist China.

Starting from November 26th we are serving our new winter menu, but no worries, all our classic and most famous dishes will stay in the menu as usual (we cannot remove and making so many of our regulars unhappy!).


This winter while dining in Mercante don’t forget to look for the Weekly Special, each of them will be proposed only for a week and in a very limited daily quantity, to offer you the freshest Italian dining experience in the city.


And don’t forget to try some of the most successful dishes from the last menu as the gorgeous Lasagna with bechamel and ragu’ alla bolognese, the mythological Cappelletti (the tortellini of Reggio Emilia shaped like the belly button of Venus) served with a concentrated cream of Parmigiano Reggiano and the gentle Rose of Parma (roasted organic beef rolled oven layers of Parma Ham and Parmigiano Reggiano).

We select high quality imported Italian ingredients, follow traditional receipes from Emilia Romagna, the so called "Food Valley" of Italy, and cook an authentic regional cuisine with focus on signature handmade fresh egg pasta (tagliatelle, pappardelle, ravioli, tortelloni), premium quality Italian cheeses and cured meat from small producers. Our dinner menu comes a-la-carte, is seasonal and enriched by monthly specials. It's the best way to enjoy our food and the atmosphere of Mercante.

When we started to imagine our restaurant we were sure about the wine experience we want to provide: it should be accessible to everyone by offering a friendly priced selection of Italian wines. Strong collaborations with some of the most reliable importers and fair wine pricing policy are our tools to offer to our guests a chance to enjoy a complete Italian dining experience: a good party, tasty food and a bottle of wine on the table!

After seven years, with a selection of around 60 labels to represent almost all Italian Regions and many varieties of wine, Mercante is a well known destination for foodies and wine lovers too.
